New Paltz ReUse Center in DIRT Magazine

Look for the upcoming article on the ReUse and Recycling Center in DIRT magazine http://dirt-mag.com/ coming up in the next issue.  On Thursday, January 16th correspondent Rusty Tagliareni, interviewed folks representing the true meaning of reuse. As an avid rescued materials re-user, he came across the New Paltz ReUse Center and scheduled to come up for a visit.

Special thanks to: Donna Birch who provided her creative art made from reused materials as a beautiful example of what can be created from rescued materials at donder211@aol.com; Wolf Bravo, Hudson Valley Scavengers, for his expertise in the subjects permaculture and tool repair https://www.facebook.com/eric.w.bravo; Phil Brown for his ever creative mind that all things can be re-created into something useful; Susan Zimet, Town Supervisor,  for her dedication and support of sustainability and zero waste; and the staff at the ReUse center who have embraced sustainable materials management and know one man's trash is another man's treasure

All users of the Recycling Center MUST have current permits to be on site. www.newpaltzreuse.org on the RESOURCES page  All New Paltz residents may bring in their Christmas trees for FREE.

ANYONE who uses needles, syringes, lancets or other sharps in their homes can and should participate in the SHARPS's program. This includes residents having diabetes or other medical conditions such as AIDS and cancer, or allergies requiring medication by injection.

Mountain View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center: Reception desk, 1 Jansen Rd., New Paltz, NY  255-0830 Will accept containerized SHARPS every first Wednesday of the month (January 8th will be the exception)

  2. Place needles and syringes into SHARPS container. You do not need to recap or break needles.

Recycling In A Minute: Commingled

Recycling In A Minute: The term commingled recycling is when more than one type of material is combined in a container.  At the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center, #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs with a neck are recycled with metal cans. These materials are mainly from the food and beverage industry although health and beauty items like shampoo bottles and laundry detergent are included because these plastic items also have a neck!

Please DO NOT throw any other items in the commingled container like plastic foam and bags. The Recycling Center does not accept these items.

COMMINGLED: METAL CANS GO WITH PLASTIC BOTTLES AND JUGS in the BIG BLUE roll-off container
metal caps & lids (soup, pet food, EMPTY aerosol cans, beverage
        cans, etc.)
plastic bottles and jugs with a neck (#1 and #2) (laundry detergent,
        water/soda bottles, shampoo, etc.)

We ARE NOT taking plastic foam (styrofoam) or any type of plastic bags in any of the recycling containers.

Think GREEN for the Holidays

Give a gift of sustainability! Check your local nursery and give a pine tree (with the roots bundled) so it can be planted in the Spring. The ReUse and Recycling Center has compost bins for $45. We also have gift certificates in any denomination.

Gifts you make -
It’s not just those ashtrays you made your parents in second grade. Most people love to receive personal gifts—make your own, or visit the ReUse Center and buy one-of-a-kind locally made gifts.

Gifts of yourself -
The “Information Age” has not carried everyone with it. Offer to help a loved one transfer that box of family photos into digital format to share with others. Or set a routine date to help them clean and organize computer files and back up data.

FYI - Paper gift wrap is recyclable; put it in with mixed paper. Or better yet reuse it for another gift or craft.

#NPRRC Open Tuesday through Saturday 9am to 4:30. CLOSED Wednesday December 25th and Wednesday, January 1st.
